How to find routine dental services and get urgent dental care.

We know that many people are finding it hard to get routine NHS dental care right now. This is a national problem. We are looking for ways to make this better.

You can look for an NHS dentist at nhs.uk and see which practices have appointments available for new patients.

Here are some important things to know about making an appointment for routine dental care:

  • you can ask for an appointment at any NHS dentist
  • you do not have to use the practice closest to you or one you have been to before
  • you do not have to register with a dentist in the same way that you do with a GP 

Each practice will be able to tell you how long you are likely to wait for an appointment. Dental practices do not have to keep waiting lists but they will tell you if they have one and ask if you would like to join.  

The NHS provides dental treatment that you need to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain.

Adults should ideally have a check-up at least once every two years and children at least once a year.

Some people can get free NHS dental treatment. Some people may only have to pay part of the cost.

Over-the-counter medicines should be used to ease toothache until you can make an appointment with a dentist. A pharmacist can give you advice on the best pain relief for your needs.

You should not visit your GP for toothache as they will not be able to give you dental care.

What should I do if I have an urgent dental problem?

You should make an urgent dental appointment if you have:

  • a very painful tooth or pain in your face that is not controlled by over-the-counter medicine
  • a tooth infection or swelling in your mouth

Lost fillings, crowns or bridges are not urgent dental problems so you will need to book a routine appointment with a dentist to treat those.

Contact an NHS dentist

The first place to try is an NHS dentist. They provide urgent care appointments during their normal working hours.

You should contact your regular dentist if you have one or you can find an NHS dentist at nhs.uk.

The dental practices listed below have additional appointments to care for people with high clinical needs, including looked after children and vulnerable adults.

You can contact any of the practices listed to ask for an appointment. The number of high needs appointments available at each practice will vary every day, so we cannot guarantee an appointment will always be available.

Dental incentivised access scheme

April - September 2025

The following practices are participating in an incentivised access scheme from April to September 2025, providing clinical appointments for patients with the highest dental clinical needs.

Examples of high clinical needs include patients who require:

  • Urgent or emergency dental care.
  • Non-urgent dental care where:
    • There is a significant risk of deterioration and/or longer-term consequences.
    • Patients are vulnerable for medical or social reasons (e.g., patients with particular medical conditions, looked after children, adults with care and support needs).
  • Primary care dentistry intervention before planned secondary dental or medical care can be progressed (e.g., patients awaiting cancer care).

Important note

The number of appointments each practice has available is variable across the days and weeks, therefore depending on the capacity they have been able to offer and the demand into the practice, we are unable to guarantee that an appointment will always be available.

If you cannot find an urgent appointment at an NHS dentist near you, visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111.

The NHS 111 health advisor will talk to you about your needs.

If you do not need help right away, we may give you advice on how to treat the problem yourself until you can get an appointment.

If you do need urgent help, we may be able to find an appointment for you at an out-of-hours treatment service where a dentist can fix the main problem you have.

Most general hospitals do not have an on-call dental service so you should visit 111.nhs.uk or call 111 for emergency dental care.

How can I avoid too many trips to the dentist?

Taking good care of your teeth and gums can help. This includes:

  • brushing your teeth twice a day
  • cleaning between your teeth
  • cutting down on sugar, smoking and alcohol
