Book your booster and stay protected this summer

People across the North East and North Cumbria are being urged to get their COVID-19 booster before the spring vaccination campaign ends on June 30.

Health experts say COVID-19 has not gone away and cases can still rise during the summer, especially among older people and those with weakened immune systems.

Anyone aged 75 and over, care home residents, and people aged six months and older with weakened immune systems are being encouraged to book their booster as soon as possible.

More than 180,300 people in the North East and North Cumbria have already had their spring booster. That is 43% of those eligible, but NHS leaders say many more people still need to come forward.

Ben Anderson, director of population health at NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “COVID-19 is not just something we see in winter.

“We still see infections during spring and summer, which is why it is important for eligible people to top up their protection and book their vaccination as soon as possible.

“Protection from earlier doses can fade over time, especially for older people and those with weaker immune systems. A booster helps strengthen protection against serious illness. Even if you had a vaccine in the autumn, you can still benefit from a spring booster.”

The NHS is also encouraging people with weakened immune systems, and parents with vulnerable children, to come forward for vaccination.

People may be eligible if they have cancer, have had an organ transplant, live with HIV, have severe kidney or liver disease, or take medicines that weaken the immune system.

Mr Anderson added: “For people with lower immunity, COVID-19 can be very serious. A simple booster can help reduce the risk of becoming seriously unwell and help people stay healthier for longer.”

Vaccination appointments can be booked using the NHS App, online through the NHS booking service, or by calling 119.

The final date to get a spring COVID-19 vaccination is Tuesday, June 30.
