'Don’t wait – just get it' couple urge others to get a Spring COVID-19 booster before it’s too late

A retired Tees Valley couple are urging everyone eligible to get their spring COVID-19 booster before the programme ends in June.

Humphrey, 86, and Margaret, 80, aren’t taking any chances this spring and are encouraging others to do the same.

“I always get all the vaccines I can,” said Humphrey. “Because I want to enjoy life for as long as possible. I tell everyone – don’t wait, just get it.”

Wife Margaret added, “Don’t hesitate – just go and do it! As you get older, it takes longer to recover from illnesses, and some people end up in hospital. We’re lucky to have the vaccine – so make the most of it and look after yourself.”

Spring COVID-19 vaccinations are now available at over 400 GP and community pharmacy sites across the North East and North Cumbria. Anyone aged 75 or over, or six months and over with a weakened immune system, is eligible for the free vaccination.

COVID-19 case rates in the North East and North Cumbria remain above the national average, with 2.9 cases per 100,000 population compared to the England average of 2.1 per 100,000.

Dr Catherine Monaghan, respiratory consultant and medical director, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said "COVID-19 hasn’t gone away and the effects of the virus can be just as serious in spring and summer as in winter.

“Even though the worst of the pandemic feels like a long time ago, COVID-19 continues to cause serious illness, especially in people aged 75 and over and those with weakened immune systems, and people are still getting very sick and ending up in hospital.

"The vaccine remains the best protection we have against the virus, which is why I'd urge anyone who is eligible to get their spring booster, to protect themselves, before appointments end on 17 June."

Invitations to book a vaccination appointment are being sent by GP practices, but you don't need to wait for an invitation and can book an appointment now:
