GP urges public to take simple steps to stay well this winter
A leading NHS doctor is urging the public to take action to stay warm, well and out of hospital this winter.

Dr Neil O'Brien, GP and chief medical officer, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB) has issued clear, practical advice to help people protect their health during the coldest months of the year.
“We want people to take the best possible steps to keep themselves well this winter,” said Dr O’Brien.
“Simple actions can make a big difference, not just for individuals, but for the NHS and the wider community too.”
Dr O'Brien's top winter tips include:
Get your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations
Eligible people are strongly encouraged to take up their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations, the most effective protection against serious illness. Vaccination helps protect those most at risk, including older people, pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions. Appointments can be booked at local community pharmacy sites, through the NHS website, at Book a flu or COVID-19 vaccine
Stop bugs in their tracks
Regular handwashing with soap and water is one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of winter viruses. Catch coughs and sneezes in a tissue, bin it immediately and wash your hands.
Keep warm and well
Heat your home to at least 18°C (65°F) if you can – especially if you’re over 65, have reduced mobility or a heart or lung condition.
Wear several light layers instead of one heavy one to trap warmth.
Eat at least one hot meal a day and enjoy warm drinks to stay hydrated and energised.

Look out for others
A quick call or visit to an older neighbour, friend or relative could be lifesaving. Make sure they’re warm, well and have what they need, especially if they live alone or struggle with mobility.
Know where to get help
Your local pharmacist can give expert advice for many minor illnesses, find your nearest available pharmacy here Find a pharmacy.
Families can download the Healthier Together app for advice on common childhood illnesses and when to get medical help.
NHS 111 is available 24/7 if you are unsure where to turn.
999 or A&E should only be used for life-threatening emergencies.
Protect your mental health
Shorter days and colder weather can also affect your mental wellbeing. If you are feeling low, anxious, or isolated, support is available at www.nhs.uk/mental-health/
