NHS urges urgent action as vulnerable groups fall behind with winter virus protection
The NHS is calling on people across the North East and North Cumbria to act now and get their winter vaccinations, warning that too many vulnerable people remain unprotected against flu and COVID-19.

Nearly one million people in the region have rolled up their sleeves for their flu and COVID-19 jabs, but health experts say many older adults and those with weakened immune systems are still missing vital protection.
Since the vaccination programme launched, in September, NHS teams have delivered over 733,000 flu vaccines and more than 209,000 COVID-19 jabs, giving those most at risk extra defence against serious illness this winter.
NHS leaders are urging anyone eligible, who hasn’t yet come forward, to book their appointment now.
Dr Catherine Monaghan, respiratory consultant and medical director, NHS North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “We know there are still many people, especially those most vulnerable to serious illnes from flu and COVID-19, who haven’t been vaccinated yet.
"The vaccines can be lifesaving. They are our best defence against these viruses and getting protected takes just minutes.
"By having your jab, you’re not only protecting yourself, but also helping to keep your family, friends, and community safe too.”
In the North East and North Cumbria, 1.7 million people are eligible for a free flu vaccine and 401,000 for a free COVID-19 jab. More than 950 vaccination sites are available in GP practices, community pharmacies, and local hospitals across the region.
The free flu vaccine is available for people aged 65 and over, pregnant women, adult care home residents, frontline heath and care staff, carers, people with long-term health conditions, close contacts of those who are immunosuppressed, children aged 2–3 and school-aged children up to Year 11. COVID-19 vaccinations are also available for over 75s, care home residents and people who are immunosuppressed.
Vaccinations for adults can be booked online at www.nhs.uk, on the NHS App or by calling 119 free of charge.
Parents are being reminded to return school flu consent forms for under-16s, 2–3-year old's can get a free flu nasal spray at their GP practice or pharmacy, and pregnant women can be vaccinated at their GP practice, pharmacy, or during antenatal appointments.
“It is vital that everyone who is eligible, and needs extra protection, takes up the offer of their vaccinations now," added Dr Monaghan.
“It could make all the difference in avoiding severe illness or even hospitalisation this winter."
