Pharmacies to offer free flu vaccinations for 2 and 3-year-olds
From 1 October, families across the North East and North Cumbria will find it easier than ever to protect their little ones from flu.
For the first time, almost 250 community pharmacies across the region will be offering the free nasal spray flu vaccine to two and three-year-olds.
Flu spreads quickly during the colder months and can be very serious. Young children are especially at risk, with those under five among the most likely to need hospital care because of flu.
Dr Catherine Monaghan, respiratory consultant and medical director, North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “Getting your child vaccinated against flu is one of the most important things you can do to protect their health this winter.
"Flu can be very serious, especially for young children, and it often spreads quickly through families.
“The flu vaccine is given as a simple nasal spray. It’s quick and painless, and helps children build strong protection against flu, reducing the chances of becoming seriously ill and helping stop the spread to others - including grandparents and older relatives who are often more vulnerable.
“It’s great news that families now have the choice to visit a participating community pharmacy for the two and three-year-olds flu vaccine, making it quick and convenient to get their child protected.”
Flu often peaks around Christmas and New Year, meaning families may risk missing out on celebrations if children fall ill.
Vaccinating children not only protects them but also helps keep the whole family healthy and able to enjoy the festive season.
Parents and carers can book a free flu vaccination for their two or three-year-old by visiting the NHS website and searching Book, change or cancel a free NHS flu vaccination at a pharmacy – NHS.
They can also book by calling 119 for free, or by contacting a local participating pharmacy directly.
The vaccine is also available through GP practices, simply get in touch with your practice to arrange an appointment.
