Emma Richardson: How an apprenticeship transformed my career in the NHS

National Apprenticeship Week 2025 is here – the biggest event in the apprenticeships and skills calendar! From 10 to 16 February, we’re shining a spotlight on the incredible value, benefits, and opportunities that apprenticeships bring to individuals, businesses, and communities.

At the heart of this celebration are real stories of success – like Emma Richardson’s. As a project officer and programme lead for the Local Maternity & Neonatal System, Emma’s apprenticeship journey has been transformative. Her experience highlights how apprenticeships empower professionals to grow their skills, advance their careers, and make a real impact.

Discover Emma’s story below and see how apprenticeships are shaping the future of our workforce.

Getting into the apprenticeship

"I have always been passionate about professional growth and learning new skills. After gaining over 20 years of experience in the public sector, I wanted to formalise my project management expertise and broaden my career horizons. The Project Manager Integrated Degree Apprenticeship was a perfect opportunity to gain a Level 6 qualification while applying practical skills to real-world NHS projects."

Training and qualifications gained

Emma has built a strong foundation in project management and professional development, earning:

  • AAT Qualification with Fellowship Status (FMAAT)
  • Level 4 Project Management Certification
  • Numerous professional development courses, including budgeting, stakeholder engagement, and leadership
  • Currently completing a Project Manager Integrated Degree Apprenticeship

Overcoming challenges

Balancing work, study, and personal responsibilities is no easy task. Emma reflects on this challenge:

"Balancing a full-time role with academic studies and personal responsibilities has been a significant challenge. However, it has taught me the importance of time management, resilience, and seeking support from colleagues and mentors when needed."

What does a project officer do?

"My role involves planning and delivering projects that align with the three-year maternity & neonatal plan and NHS priorities, collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders, and ensuring that services meet the needs of women, their families, and staff. Essentially, I help make sure vital healthcare improvements are well-planned, funded, and delivered."

The best part of an apprenticeship in the NHS

Emma finds deep satisfaction in knowing her work makes a real difference:

"Knowing that my work directly impacts the quality of care for women and their families and supports the NHS’s long-term goals is incredibly rewarding. I also love seeing projects come to fruition, especially when they improve services for mothers and newborns."

Challenges of the role

Managing priorities in a fast-paced healthcare environment can be difficult:

"Managing competing priorities in a complex and fast-paced environment can be challenging. Balancing strategic planning with day-to-day problem-solving requires constant focus and adaptability."

Looking to the future

Emma is committed to continued professional development:

"I plan to complete my Level 6 Project Management Degree Apprenticeship and potentially pursue a master’s in healthcare leadership. I’m also keen on mentoring others in the NHS to support their professional development."

Advice for aspiring apprentices

Emma’s message to anyone considering an apprenticeship in the NHS is clear:

"Working in the NHS is incredibly fulfilling because you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself. My advice is to take every opportunity to learn, be open to challenges, and never hesitate to ask for help or mentorship. An apprenticeship is a fantastic way to gain qualifications and real-world experience simultaneously."
