Flu and Covid-19 vaccinations. Be wise, immunise.

Across the North East and North Cumbria our teams are still working to vaccinate people against flu.

The flu vaccine is safe and effective and gives you the best protection against the virus. All the latest information about the flu vaccine – who is eligible and how safe it is, can be found here on the NHS website.

How to book a Flu vaccination

You can use the find a pharmacy service to find a pharmacy that offers free flu vaccination. This service will close after 31 March 2025.

2-3 year-olds can still have a flu nasal spray at their GP surgery, until 31 March.

Anyone who is pregnant can get a flu vaccination from their local maternity service, until 31 March - speak to your midwife or GP.

Be wise, immunise - get vaccinated and get protected.

From 3 October flu vaccinations will be available for eligible groups including:

  • adults aged 65 and over
  • residents in older adult care homes
  • anyone who is pregnant
  • those with underlying health conditions aged 6 months to 64 years
  • frontline health and social care workers.
  • nursery school children aged 2-3
  • school children from reception to Year 11
  • close contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised.

Flu vaccinations for school children, delivered by school immunisation teams, started in September to coincide with the new school year - to help stop the virus spreading.

2–3-year-olds can get the flu nasal spray at their GP practice and anyone who is pregnant has been able to get their vaccine from 1 September at their GP practice, pharmacy, or regular antenatal appointment.

  • Flu is still making people very ill.
  • Those most vulnerable and at increased risk from flu are eligible for a free seasonal vaccine for extra protection.
  • This includes anyone over 65, residents in older adult care homes, anyone who is pregnant, those with underlying health conditions aged 6 months to 64 years and frontline health and social care workers, nursery school children aged 2-3, school children from reception to Year 11 and close contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised.
  • Flu vaccinations for school children, delivered by school immunisation teams, started in September to coincide with the new school year - to help stop the virus spreading.
  • 2–3-year-olds can get the flu nasal spray at their GP practice and pregnant women have been able to get their vaccine from 1 September at their GP practice, pharmacy, or regular antenatal appointment.
  • If you’re not sure if you are eligible you can find out more at NHS.uk (and for a full list of conditions and criteria, please see the immunosuppressed sections of Tables 3 and 4 of the UK Health Security Agency’s Green Book).
  • If you are eligible, it is important to top up your protection even if you have had earlier vaccinations or have had the viruses, as your immunity fades over time.
  • It can take 14 days for the vaccination to take full effect, so everyone due a further dose is encouraged to get it as early as possible for maximum protection.

COVID-19 inter-seasonal vaccination guidance for people whose immune system means they are at higher risk

Who is this guidance for?

Immunosuppression means your immune system is weaker than usual, either because of a specific health condition or because you are taking medicine or undergoing treatment that affects your immune system.

If you are immunosuppressed, or have certain other medical conditions, you may find it harder to fight off infections and illnesses, including COVID-19.

Most people with immunosuppression are cared for by a hospital specialist or are known to their GP.  Because of this, they are usually entitled to one, or both, of the following:

  • Extra vaccines, such as COVID-19 boosters
  • COVID-19 treatments

You can find more details about COVID-19 vaccinations and who is included on the government vaccination and treatments web page.

COVID-19 inter-seasonal vaccinations, for people whose immune system means they are at higher risk, can be booked on the NHS 'Be wise, immunise' website.
