Serving one of the largest geographical areas of any NHS trust in England, Northumbria Healthcare provides a wide range of services to more than half a million people living in Northumberland and North Tyneside.
It’s one of the few Foundation Trusts in the country to have been twice rated ‘outstanding’ overall by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is consistently one of the best performing NHS organisations in the country. More than 12,000 dedicated NHS staff are employed to provide services across health and care sites and in the wider community.
Who we serve
With more than £800 million turnover our Trust prides itself on excellence in everything we do. Not only do we provide hospital services, we run community and social care services to a population of around 500,000 across Northumberland and North Tyneside.
We also own and operate GP practices with a collective list size of over 50,000 patients and run a number of commercial businesses all adding income to our bottom line which is reinvested in innovation and patient care. Last year we saw more than 340,000 outpatients, 217,700 emergency patients, 52,000 adult social care appointments, 50,400 day cases and 925,000 community patients. We also completed 370,000 diagnostic tests and carried out more than 25,400 operations.
Our ten hospital sites cover an area of more than 2,500 square miles from the Scottish border to the banks of the River Tyne.
Investing in our future
Our strength, depth and financial resilience allows us to think beyond the here and now. Research and innovation will always be our guide to continuous improvement and the evolution of patient care. As a result, we are a clinically-led organisation and connected closely to Universities with some of our consultant body prominent nationally and internationally.
Northumbria is hoping to invest £25 million in the Northumbria Health and Care Academy on our hospital site in Cramlington. The trust is working in partnership with developer, Assura plc, and planning and development consultants, Lichfields on the plans for the hub which is great news for patients, staff and the wider economy. The proposed 6,750 square metre development will accommodate a clinical skills and nursing training centre of excellence, conference facilities, office space, meeting rooms and flexible space for potential clinical use.
Construction of an £8 million state-of-the art healthcare sterilisation facility is underway in Northumberland. The Trust’s centralised sterilisation service department (CSSD) is being built next to its emergency hospital in Cramlington. It will be carbon neutral and provide a critical support service for the trust and other healthcare organisations. It will have the ability to disinfect and sterilise more than half a million pieces of medical equipment a year, used in a wide range of hospital departments and in GP practices.
Northumbria is planning on building a new multi-million-pound hospital in Berwick. The new, £25m hospital will re-provide all the existing services and embrace the latest technology. It is planned that Well Close Medical Group will be part of the new development which will pave the way for further integration between primary care (the GPs) and secondary care (the hospital). The target completion date for the new hospital is spring 2022.
