Our provider collaborative

We are a region that thrives on collaborations and this has never been more apparent than during the past year. By working together, we have been able to deal with the many challenges posed by a global pandemic.

The relationships that have enabled us to do this have been built over many years and driven by a shared ambition to do the very best for our patients, local communities and those who work for us. They also span many different partners from primary care, public health, local authorities and voluntary organisations to our colleges, school, universities and businesses and many more.

Even before Covid, these relationships were essential to meeting the ever-changing needs and expectations for health and care - from a growing and older population to new treatments and technologies. As NHS providers across the North East and North Cumbria we have already embraced many of these challenges of our ever-changing healthcare landscape, and have improved care and the experiences of patients as a result, but there is more to do.

As a result, NHS provider chief executives across the North East and North Cumbria, have agreed to form a ‘Provider Collaborative’.

Northumbria Healthcare's manufacturing and innovation hub

Northumbria Healthcare's innovative NHS factory was officially opened by the Prime Minister and played a major part in the North East response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The trailblazing project was set up to make personal protective equipment (PPE) for staff across the UK, bringing manufacturing back to the local area, boosting supply during COVID-19 and also providing a welcome uplift to the local economy.

Health and care leaders at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (STSFT) have unveiled exciting plans for a new state-of-the-art £10 million Integrated Diagnostic Centre at South Tyneside District Hospital.

NEAS is one of the only ambulance trusts in England to have a highly successful and growing commercial training wing; generating income from across all industrial sectors. Commercial training provides expert, value for money training and education with all profits going directly back into front line services to patients.

The integrated Covid hub for the north east is the first of its kind in England, providing improved capacity for Covid-19 testing, facilities to develop innovative approaches to Covid science and a regional centre to share and coordinate data, information and resources in the fight against the virus.

Hospitals for the future

A new £35m cancer centre named the Northern Centre for Cancer Care, North Cumbria has been built on the Cumberland Infirmary site and is a partnership between NCIC and Newcastle Hospitals. This will mean that more people can access care closer to home, improving cancer services for patients all over north Cumbria.

Remote ECGs

Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust were the first NHS Trust in the country to introduce a portable and wireless ECG device for mental health patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. The KardiaMobile 6L device was rolled out to six of our community teams to pilot monitoring patients in their own homes to ensure essential ECGs continued, while also reducing the risk of COVID-19 transmission through the ability to offer safe, socially distant care.

North Tees and Hartlepool first in UK to test new COVID recovery treatment

North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust became the first Trust in the country to use a new COVID-19 recovery treatment on patients.

It is part of a national RECOVERY clinical trial which aims to identify beneficial treatments for people hospitalised with suspected or confirmed COVID-19.

Robotic surgery beats hidden cancer

Retired hospital consultant Liam Flood returned The James Cook University Hospital as a patient where he was treated by head and neck surgeon Shane Lester, who carried out a biopsy using the one of the trust’s da Vinci robots which revealed a hidden cancer in the base of Liam’s tongue.
